Doctor Who: Ben Miller to play villain in Mark Gatiss episode

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

Ben Miller is to play a villain on Doctor Who.

Miller will face off against Peter Capaldi's new Doctor in the BBC sci-fi drama's next series.

"As a committed Whovian I cannot believe my luck in joining the Twelfth Doctor for one of his inaugural adventures," the actor and comic said. "My only worry is that they'll make me leave the set when I'm not filming."

Miller will appear in an episode penned by Mark Gatiss, set to air later in 2014.

"Mark Gatiss has written us a storming villain for his new episode," said lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat.

"With Capaldi in the TARDIS, we knew we needed somebody special to send everybody behind the sofa. And quite frankly, it's about time Ben Miller was in Doctor Who!"

48-year-old Miller previously played the lead in BBC One's Death in Paradise and appeared in ITV sci-fi Primeval.

He is also known for his comedy work opposite Alexander Armstrong, who previously appeared in Doctor Who in 2011 and provided voice work for spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Other guest stars joining Miller in the next series of Doctor Who include Tom Riley (Da Vinci's Demons) and Keeley Hawes (Line of Duty).

‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ star Tom Riley joins ‘Doctor Who’ series 8

32 year-old British actor Tom Riley is set to appear in the upcoming eighth series of Doctor Who in an episode written by veteran Who scribe Mark Gatiss.

Riley has previously appeared in detective dramas Lewis and Monroe, St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold (alongside former Doctor Who star David Tennant), comedy series Twenty Twelve and STARZ’s Da Vinci’s Demons, in which he plays Leonardo Da Vinci.

On the news, Riley tweeted: “Well, that’s out then. I’ve been a massive fan since I was even smaller than Jenna. Very excited. @MarkGatiss’s script is awesome.”

Just as Riley’s exact role remains a mystery, little is known of his episode as a whole although it has been confirmed that Gatiss is writing two episodes for Capaldi’s Doctor. However, Gatiss has clarified that though he has been commissioned for two episodes, “that doesn’t mean they’ll both necessarily be in this season.”

Facts about the new series are slowly coming together. Besides Mark Gatiss, other confirmed writers include Steven Moffat, Stephen Thompson and Phil Ford, while the other big guest name so far announced to be appearing in the series is Keeley Hawes.

Hawes, known for roles in Ashes to Ashes, Upstairs, Downstairs and more recently Line of Duty, is to appear as the villainous Miss Delphox in Phil Ford’s episode for the series. She will be a tough alien businesswoman, described by the BBC as a “powerful out of this world character with a dark secret.”

Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi's first episode thrilling, says Mark Gatiss

Tuesday, March 11, 2014

Mark Gatiss has promised an "exciting" and "disturbing" debut for Peter Capaldi on Doctor Who.

Speaking to Digital Spy at the London Lesbian & Gay Switchboard 40th Anniversary Gala last night, Gatiss spoke about writing for Doctor Who series eight.

"Peter has a very different energy to Matt Smith and to David Tennant," he said. "He's older which changes everything - it's amazing what a change does!

"Matt was sublime and I was very sorry to see him go, but it's also great to have a change - as it has always been with the Doctor."

Gatiss added that Capaldi's new Doctor brings with him "a whole new set of rules".

"The Doctor's always the Doctor - but you can have a lot of fun playing with people's expectations," he continued. "Everyone knows how the previous Doctor would react in any given situation - and now you just don't know!"

Steven Moffat has written Capaldi's first full Doctor Who episode, which Gatiss described as "thrilling".

The sci-fi drama will return to BBC One later in 2014, with Sherlock's Steve Thompson also among the confirmed writers for the latest run.

Sherlock series 4: We'll make it as quickly as we can, says Moffat

Friday, January 10, 2014

Sherlock will return for a fourth series "as quickly" as possible, co-creator Steven Moffat has insisted.

A fourth and fifth series of the hit detective show have been planned, Moffat revealed last night (January 8) at a BAFTA screening of third series finale 'His Last Vow'.

"Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Martin [Freeman] are apparently in movies!" quipped the writer. "So we've got to schedule around them, but we'll get them made as quickly as we can."

Series producer Sue Vertue added: "We're working on it - it's dates."

Sherlock premiered its third series on BBC One on New Year's Day, following a two-year hiatus.

"We couldn't get together before then," said Vertue. "We did worry that [in] two years, you might forget about us, but clearly not!"

Moffat also suggested that the hiatus may have contributed to Sherlock's recent ratings success.

"Sherlock started very well, the second series did better than the first and now the third is doing better than the second," he said. "It shows the benefits of starvation - put things on less often!"

'His Last Vow' airs on BBC One on Sunday, January 12 at 8.30pm in the UK. The third series will debut on BBC America the following Sunday (January 19) in the US.

Benedict Cumberbatch: 'Jonny Lee Miller is great as Sherlock'

Tuesday, December 31, 2013

Benedict Cumberbatch has praised Jonny Lee Miller's performance as Sherlock Holmes in CBS show Elementary.

Like the BBC's Sherlock, the US show sets Arthur Conan Doyle's character in the modern day. It cast Cumberbatch's friend and Frankenstein co-star in its lead role.

"I watched it... it's great. It's watching an actor I really like playing a part I really like and enjoy playing," Cumberbatch told Digital Spy and other journalists.

"And to see him relishing it in similar ways is fantastic. I think he's doing a wonderful job."

Quizzed how he would out-Sherlock his friend, Cumberbatch replied: "There are 78 of us all vying for the position, out-Sherlocking one another. So we're in good company."

After initially admitting to feeling "cynical" about Elementary when it was first announced, Cumberbatch later called the show "fantastic" and urged people to watch.

However, Cumberbatch's Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman admitted that he had not seen Elementary, which stars Lucy Liu as Joan Watson.

"I haven't and that's not a snubbing, it's just because I haven't seen most shows from anywhere," Freeman said.

"I wish them the best of luck, I think she's great, I think Jonny Lee Miller is really good."

Show co-creator Steven Moffat added: "The truth is we haven't seen it... the only thing we can do is maintain absolute separation.

"It's not just one other version of Sherlock Holmes, it's every other version of Sherlock Holmes. There's the Robert Downey Jr films.

"Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett live on television most days if you look hard enough! You're never the only version of Sherlock Holmes. "

Of whether he and Mark Gatiss would do episodes that did not spring off a Conan Doyle story, Moffat said: "We sort of have already. There are episodes that are brand-new stories really, with ingredients and elements from the original.

"We don't feel any sort of obligation to start from an original. There are just so many unused, untouched ideas in the original that you want to go for them. The majority of our stories are new."

Gatiss agreed: "They are really. There's obviously enshrined moments and things like that. I put the harpoon from '[The Adventure of] Black Peter into 'Baskerville' because it's a cool moment.

"That story never gets done - there's nothing much to it apart from a man getting speared through a wall. But it's a cool idea. I think there's so much brilliant stuff in Doyle."

Sherlock will return for a third series on January 1, 2014 at 9pm on BBC One.
