Doctor Who's David Tennant is teaming up with Lena Dunham for her remake of Camping

Sunday, March 18, 2018

Doctor Who's David Tennant will collaborate with Lena Dunham for his next major TV series.

Tennant has been cast in a leading role in Dunham and Girls collaborator Jenni Konner's remake of the British comedy series Camping, according to TheWrap.

Jennifer Garner previously signed on to star in Camping as housewife Kathryn Siddell-Bauers, who organises a weekend excursion into nature to celebrate her husband Walt's (Tennant) 45th birthday.

However, the trip goes south when Kathryn's sister and judgy best friend bring along a free-spirited wild child. Before the weekend is over, a crime will have taken place and a marriage will have been tested.

This is the latest of a few US roles for Tennant, who most recently made a brief re-appearance as the mind-controlling super-villain Kilgrave in the second season of Netflix's Jessica Jones.

Tennant also currently voices Scrooge McDuck in Disney's animated reboot of the DuckTales series, and is set for a co-starring role with Michael Sheen and Jon Hamm in Amazon Prime and BBC Two's adaptation of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's beloved novel Good Omens.

Camping will be Lena Dunham and writing partner Jenni Konner's comeback to US premium channel HBO, after wrapping their influential dramedy Girls last year.

The original Camping, which was written by and starred Julia Davis, aired on Sky Atlantic in the UK in the spring of 2016. Its US adaptation will comprise eight episodes.

An HBO air date for Camping in the US hasn't been announced yet. No UK broadcast is attached at this stage either.

Michelle Ryan returns to Doctor Who as Lady Christina With Big Finish

Thursday, March 15, 2018

Michelle Ryan is returning to Doctor Who as Lady Christina de Souza makes a comeback to the Whoniverse.

In September 2018, the EastEnders and Merlin actress will star in four new Big Finish audio productions.

The mysterious thief appeared in the Doctor Who episode Planet of the Dead in 2009 alongside David Tennant, and these new audio adventures will reveal what happened after she flew off on a double decker bus.

Ryan said: “Being asked to revisit the role of Lady Christina was a very easy decision. Adventure, a sunny climate and mind-boggling scenarios are included in the scripts, everything I remember of my Doctor Who experience.

“Alas no David Tennant, but there’s a host of new characters to help along the way. I love that we get to see a little more of her heart in the stories, that she does care about the greater good whilst also satisfying her curiosity for life.”

Luther actor Warren Brown will co-star alongside Ryan in the audio adventures, as well as Jacqueline King who reprises her role of Donna’s mum Sylvia Noble.
The four new stories will be called: It Takes a Thief by John Dorney, Skin Deep by James Goss, Portrait of a Lady by Tim Dawson and Death on the Mile by Donald McLeary.

Doctor Who: Series 11 to revisit US civil rights movement

Wednesday, March 14, 2018

New Doctor Who boss Chris Chibnall is keen to make the show as educational as it is entertaining – just as it set out to be in the 1960s.

With that in mind he has embarked on a mission for the Doctor’s new friends Ryan and Yasmin to be transported back in time to witness historical events that are particularly relevant to their own ethnic backgrounds.

The teens, played by former Hollyoaks stars Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill, have already filmed with Doctor Jodie Whittaker in Cape Town, South Africa which doubled as 1950s America.

In the plot the Time Lord comes face to face with American civil rights activist Rosa Parks, who in 1955 famously refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white passenger, sparking the beginning of the end for segregation.

Thanks to the TARDIS, the time travellers will witness Alabama bus driver James F Blake telling Rosa to give up her seat, and her brave refusal.

And that’s not all.

The production is now heading off to India, where the gang will find out more about the country’s past and perhaps Yasmin’s own family heritage.

One source said: “The Doctor has all of space and time to explore so it’ll be fascinating to see the gang from 2018 having a good rummage around in big, important events which have changed the course of history.”

When it launched in 1963, Doctor Who was intended by creator Sydney Newman to be an educational series for children.

During the William Hartnell years, viewers learned about Marco Polo, the Aztecs, the crusades, the French Revolution and the Romans, but the practice ended in Patrick Troughton’s era.

Previous foreign filming locations on Doctor Who included Paris, Amsterdam and Lanzarote for the original series.

Since the reboot the various Doctors have visited New York, Rome, Dubai and Fuerteventura while Paul McGann’s TV movie was shot in and around Vancouver.

The next series of 10 episodes, which hits BBC1 in the autumn, will see three stories set in the future, three in the past, and the rest in the present day.

Bring. It. On.

Doctor Who: Series 11 - Alan Cumming To Play King James I

Friday, March 9, 2018

Jodie Whittaker's first series of Doctor Who will apparently bring her TARDIS companions face-to-face with proper legend Alan Cumming.

The X-Men and Good Wife star let slip on the latest edition of Will Young and Chris Sweeney's podcast Homo Sapiens that he'll soon start filming a guest appearance as the Scottish monarch King James I.

"I'm about to go and do an episode of Doctor Who," he revealed. "I'm so excited! I've never been in it."

Alan even indicated that King James I could become a recurring figure in the 11th series of Doctor Who when Will and Chris questioned him on if he's going to be "a baddie".

"Like a nice baddie. I'm like a sort of dandy, foppy character who becomes alright in the end," he revealed. "They said he might come back."

Digital Spy has reached out to the BBC for more information about Alan Cumming's guest appearance in Doctor Who.

Cumming joins a long list of acclaimed actors who've played historical figures in Doctor Who — Ian McNeice as Winston Churchill, Pauline Collins as Queen Victoria and Tony Curran as Vincent van Gogh, among them.

On-set photos leaking over the past few weeks have tipped a number of historical adventures for the Thirteenth Doctor and her compatriots in the upcoming 11th series.

Early indications are that one episode will see The Doctor travelling far into the past, while another adventure could feature civil rights activist Rosa Parks in some way.

Broadchurch to return for 2nd Series!

Monday, April 22, 2013

For those of you who have been watching Broadchurch, starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman. You will be happy to know it is to return for a 2nd Series. The show also starred Jodie Whittaker and Doctor Who's Arthur Darvill to name but a few.

ITV released the following press release:

Broadchurch will return for a second series, ITV confirmed tonight (Monday 22 April). The successful series, produced by Kudos Film and Television and Imaginary Friends Productions, written and created by Chris Chibnall, starring a strong ensemble cast lead by David Tennant and Olivia Colman has gripped the nation with viewers intrigued by the circumstances surrounding the death of young Danny Latimer.

The new series will go into production next year. As with the first series, details of the story, and which characters will return, are currently being kept tightly under wraps. Since launching on 4 March, the drama has never been far from everyday conversation, becoming compelling viewing as the audience have dissected and analysed the cleverly crafted scripts, which implicated many of the locals living in the small picturesque seaside Dorset community of Broadchurch, home to the Latimer family.

The first episode rating of 9.1 million (31% audience share) saw Broadchurch achieve the highest weekday launch of a new drama across all broadcasters since ITV’s Whitechapel in January 2009. More than 9 million viewers have watched the popular drama unfold. Only two other dramas on television launching during weekday have rated higher since 2002, both from ITV, Life Begins and Doc Martin. The compelling series, produced by Kudos Film and Television, which also starred, Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Vicky McClure, Arthur Darvill, David Bradley, Pauline Quirke, Jonathan Bailey, Carolyn Pickles and Will Mellor, had bookmakers running odds on who they thought was responsible for Danny’s death.

Commissioned for ITV by Acting Director of Drama Commissioning, Steve November, Broadchurch is executive produced by Chris Chibnall, and Kudos Film and Television’s Jane Featherstone. The series was produced by Richard Stokes and the lead director was James Strong. Euros Lyn also directed three episodes of the series. “We’re delighted to be commissioning a second series of Broadchurch,” said ITV’s Director of Television, Peter Fincham. “From the moment the murder scene was discovered, viewers became gripped by the series, and we’ve been genuinely thrilled by the audience response.

David and Olivia’s performances and Chris’s cleverly crafted scripts have created a truly compelling drama.” Creator and writer Chris Chibnall said: "The whole Broadchurch team has been delighted and properly gobsmacked by the response from ITV viewers. When I first talked to Peter Fincham and Laura Mackie, ITV’s Director of Drama about Broadchurch, I mentioned that if people liked it, there was another very different story we could tell afterwards. I'm really thrilled we're going to tell that story too."

Executive producer, Jane Featherstone for Kudos Film and Television commented: “It’s such a privilege for Kudos to be able to work with Chris and ITV to bring the next chapter of Broadchurch to our screens. And although we’re giving nothing away right now, I can tell you it’s going to keep on delivering surprises and scale.”

Christopher Eccleston to feature in Doctor Who

Thursday, April 18, 2013

Christopher Eccleston will feature in upcoming 'Doctor Who' episode 'Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS', when the Ninth Doctor's voice is heard as a space crew try and break into the TARDIS.

Christopher Eccleston is returning to 'Doctor Who' - as a voice from the past.

The 49-year-old actor was rumoured to be coming back for the sci-fi show's 50th anniversary episode in November but decided not to reprise his role as the Ninth Doctor.

However, he will feature in next week's episode 'Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS', which focuses on a spaceship salvage team which captures the TARDIS.

As they try and break into the time-travelling machine viewers will hear the Ninth Doctor's voice say, "The assembled hordes of Genghis Khan couldn't get through these doors, and believe me they've tried."

It is a line from 'Rose', which was the first episode of the new run of 'Doctor Who' which began in 2005 and starred Billie Piper as the Time Lord's companion Rose Tyler.

It was revealed that Christopher had met with showrunner Steven Moffat to discuss the possibility of returning for the 50th anniversary special alongside Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith and Tenth Doctor David Tennant.

However, he ultimately decided not to come back for the feature-length adventure, which will also feature Billie and current companion Jenna-Louise Coleman.

A spokesperson for the BBC previously said: "Chris met with Steven Moffat a couple of times to talk about Steven's plans for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode. After careful thought, Chris decided not to be in the episode. He wishes the team all the best."

New SyFy Channel Show 'Defiance' Kicks Off!

Monday, April 15, 2013

It kicks off in America, at 9pm Eastern and 8pm Central tonight and Canada on Showcase at 10pm tonight , the UK and Ireland tomorrow at 9pm, Brazil tomorrow at 8pm, Germany tomorrow at 8.15pm, France at 10.15pm and Spain at 10.25pm tomorrow. It starts in Australia on their SF Channel at 9.30pm April 18th and Portugal have to wait until May 5th at 10pm for it to air on their channel TVSeries.

The also features Warehouse 13's Jaime Murray.

So here is the background on the show:

The series is set in the near future, where aliens known collectively as Votans have come to Earth seeking a new home after their star system was destroyed in a stellar collision. The Votans had thought Earth was uninhabited, but upon their arrival in 2013 discover that humans are living on the planet, who respond to them with hostility and suspicion.

A limited number of Votans are allowed to settle in a colony in Brazil, and eventually two other colonies, but millions of Votans remained in hypersleep aboard their ships in orbit as negotiations dragged on with Earth governments for full-scale settlement.

Tensions rose for ten years, but the Votan and human governments were on the verge of negotiating a peaceful settlement, when in 2023 the Votan ambassador to the United Nations was assassinated by a disgruntled human supremacist on live television outside of the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. This sparked a disastrous global conflict between humans and the aliens known as the "Pale Wars". The wars tore apart the planet for seven years, until their culmination in 2030 in the apocalyptic "Arkfall" event, when the Ark fleet in orbit mysteriously exploded. The aliens think a rogue human commander was responsible, while humans suspect it was an alien weapons experiment gone awry. Millions of Votans died in hypersleep. During the Arkfall, destroyed Arks rained down on Earth and accidentally released terraformer technology.

While the Votans had intended to use their terraforming technology in a carefully planned manner, the Arkfall haphazardly unleashed chaotic and radical changes to the biosphere and even the geology of Earth, making the planet dangerous to both humans and the aliens. The earth was scorched, chasms opened in the ground, new mountain ranges were raised, and the surface of the planet was covered with dust and debris. Animal and plant species from the Votan star system were introduced to Earth, and both native and alien animal species were horribly mutated by the uncontrolled terraformer technology, creating bizarre and dangerous hybrids and new species.

Within a few months, the Pale Wars wound down as both sides had fought to the point of mutual exhaustion, and a ceasefire was declared. Few organized governments remained for either the humans or the aliens, and both sides factionalized as their members began looking out for themselves. In several areas, local human and Votan militias began to band together when they realized that they had to co-operate if they hoped to survive on this new, almost alien planet.

The debris from the destroyed Ark fleet now forms an artificial "Ark belt" in Earth orbit, which periodically rains down in small-scale "Arkfalls", which present a hazard for survivors on the surface, but also provide valuable opportunities to salvage advanced technology aboard the Arks (which even the aliens can no longer easily reproduce on their own).

The Return of Blakes 7

Cult classic sci-fi series Blake's 7 is to be remade for the Syfy network, it has been announced.

FremantleMedia International said 13 hour-long episodes will be written by Heroes writer Joe Pokaski.

It added, in a statement, that Casino Royale and Goldeneye director Martin Campbell was also on board.

The original series, which ran on the BBC between 1978 and 1981, followed the exploits of a group of renegades and convicted criminals.

Roj Blake, played by Welsh actor Gareth Thomas, was a political dissident arrested, tried and convicted on false charges by a brutal totalitarian government, and then deported from Earth to a prison planet.

Stealing a spaceship, Blake and his team conducted a campaign against the ruling Terran Federation.

Peak audience

Comparing Blake's 7 with the hit US sci-fi series Star Trek, The Independent said in 1998: "No 'boldly going' here: instead, we got the boot stamping on a human face which George Orwell offered as a vision of humanity's future in Nineteen Eighty-Four."

At its peak, the series was watched by 10 million viewers and was sold to 40 countries. A range of Blake's 7 merchandise including books, magazines, annuals and toys were also released.

A radio adaptation, featuring This Life's Daniela Nardini as villain Servalan, was made in 2006.

According to FremantleMedia, the new series will be set in 2136 and will "tell the story of seven criminals - six guilty and one innocent - on their way to life on a prison colony in space, who together wrestle freedom from imprisonment".

It continued: "They acquire an alien ship which gives them a second chance at life and become the most unlikely heroes of their time".

Chief executive officer David Ellender said: "Blake's 7 was such a forward-thinking concept that the show continues to have resonance with audiences today."

The latest announcement is not the first time a remake of Blake's 7 has been attempted.

In 2003, a miniseries was shelved after actor Paul Darrow - who played Kerr Avon in the original show - left the project.

Later in 2008, Sky One announced it had commissioned two 60-minute scripts for a potential series but two years later said it had decided not to proceed.
