Sherlock's Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat delighted by 'Empty Hearse' ratings

Friday, January 3, 2014

Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have spoken of their delight at last night's bumper ratings for Sherlock's series three premiere 'The Empty Hearse'.

The show picked up 9.2 million viewers on New Year's Day (a 33.8% share) at 9pm on BBC One, considerably higher than its New Year launch in 2012, which had 8.8 million (31%).

Its first series debuted with 7.1 million (28.6%) in 2010.

Speaking about the response, co-creator Moffat said: "Thrilling news on overnight ratings for Sherlock. A tribute to the team who work so hard, and with such pride, on the show, and of course to the genius of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

"It's proof that audiences will show up if you give them what they want - though we can't throw Benedict [Cumberbatch] off a roof ever week."

Gatiss, who wrote the episode, added: "Delighted our loyal audience tuned in on an appropriately bleak and stormy New Year's night!

"After two years it's fantastic to have this response to Sherlock, John and all the team being back on TV. All this and Dr Watson gets married in three days' time!"

The next episode of Sherlock, 'The Sign of 3', airs on Sunday, January 5 at 8.30pm on BBC One.

Martin Freeman almost missed out on Sherlock role due to bad audition

Tuesday, December 31, 2013

Martin Freeman has revealed that he almost missed out on the role of Dr Watson in Sherlock.

The 42-year-old star of The Hobbit revealed to Radio Times, that his first audition was not successful after being a victim of robbery earlier in the day.

Freeman said that he felt distracted in the audition and meeting with producers, after he was targeted by a thief and had his wallet stolen.

"I'll admit maybe I was a bit stressed," said the actor, who stars alongside his real-life partner Amanda Abbington in the third series of the hit BBC One drama - which returns next week.

"But a week later my agent rang and said, 'Listen, this Sherlock thing, they're sort of under the impression you weren't that into it.' And I said 'Oh... I am really interested. Please call them and let them know that I am interested.' I wasn't being blase about it at all. I just wasn't on my best day."

Freeman then added that it was a chemistry test with co-star Benedict Cumberbatch that ensured he got the role.

"I came in again, read with Benedict and it instantly worked, it seemed to me... I thought he was a fantastic actor and there was something about our rhythms, similarities and differences that meant that it just happened."

Sherlock returns on BBC One, January 1, 9pm.
