'Doctor Who' Clara was meant to be Victorian governess, says Neil Gaiman

Friday, May 17, 2013

Neil Gaiman has revealed that Doctor Who companion Clara was originally intended to remain a Victorian governess.

Jenna-Louise Coleman played space-faring Oswin Oswald and a Victorian Clara before debuting as the contemporary version of the character who now travels with Matt Smith's Doctor.

"The original companion was going to be very much the Victorian governess we saw at Christmas," Gaiman - who wrote Saturday's Who episode 'Nightmare in Silver' - told the Radio Times.

"I wrote about the first ten pages and then they said they'd changed the companion from what I was expecting to something else."

Gaiman explained that he subsequently had to "reshape" his Cybermen tale to reflect the change.

"We decided they can do more weird stuff if it's now the contemporary third incarnation," he said.

Doctor Who's current series concludes this Saturday (May 18) at 7pm on BBC One.

Finale episode 'The Name of the Doctor' - written by showrunner Steven Moffat - promises to resolve the mystery surrounding Clara's multiple identities.

'Doctor Who' finale 'The Name of the Doctor' leaked in US error

Monday, May 13, 2013

Next week's Doctor Who finale 'The Name of the Doctor' has been leaked. The episode is featured on the Series 7 Part 2 Blu-ray release, which was accidentally dispatched early to fans in the US over the weekend

It emerged on May 12th that fans who had pre-ordered the boxset in the US had received the Blu-ray before the final two episodes of the current series had been transmitted.

Edward Russell, the BBC Brand Manager for Doctor Who, tweeted about the incident and urged those who had received the episodes to not spoil other fans.

He posted: "Production error in US means DW bluray shipped early. Let's hope no one spoils it for those who want to enjoy it together on Sat. Please RT." The show's official Twitter account has also posted a message concerning the leak.

They too urged fans to consider the enjoyment of others before posting spoilers. They tweeted: "Some US DVDs of this series have gone out early. The #DoctorWho team would be hugely grateful if fans helped keep spoilers off the net."

They continued: "Steven Moffat has promised if fans help keep the finale's secrets, we'll release a special video featuring Matt & David right after the ep!"

A three-minute prequel for 'The Name of the Doctor' was released by the BBC following the conclusion of last night's episode 'Nightmare in Silver'.

It features the Doctor (Matt Smith) and Clara (Jenna Louise Coleman) admitting how little they know of each other.

Executive producer Steven Moffat has teased the finale episode, saying that the episode will "change the course of Who forever".

It is thought that the episode will directly lead in to the 50th anniversary special episode, which is scheduled to air on November 23. 'The Name of the Doctor' airs Saturday May 18 at 7pm on BBC One.

Russell Tovey confirms 'Doctor Who' audition: It would've terrified me

Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Russell Tovey has revealed that he auditioned for the lead role in Doctor Who.

The Being Human actor was briefly tipped to replace David Tennant on the BBC sci-fi drama, after appearing in two episodes as the character Midshipman Frame.

The 31-year-old did screen-test for the part of the Eleventh Doctor, according to The Independent, but ultimately lost out to current Who lead Matt Smith.

"It would have terrified me," Tovey is quoted as saying. "I don't know what I would have done with all the attention."

The actor can currently be seen in ITV's new sitcom The Job Lot, which airs on Monday nights at 9.30pm.

Doctor Who is to debut a special prequel to its finale episode via the BBC's red button service.
