Almost Human to air on Watch in the UK

Friday, March 28, 2014

So as I mentioned in a previous post (2nd January 2014) Almost Human had not been picked up by a UK broadcaster... until now..

US sci-fi drama Almost Human has found a UK home.

The Fox series - from JJ Abrams and Fringe showrunner Joel Wyman - has been acquired by Watch.

The UKTV channel will air Almost Human later in 2014.

The 13-part first season stars Karl Urban as John Kennex, a tech-phobic detective in the year 2048.

Kennex must learn to adapt when he is partnered with an eccentric android partner - Michael Ealy's Dorian.

Watch previously acquired another US sci-fi thriller from JJ Abrams. Believe - a collaboration with Alfonso Cuarón - will debut on the channel tonight (March 27) at 9pm.

UKTV's director of programme acquisitions Catherine Mackin said: "Almost Human is a multilayered, gripping drama and it perfectly complements supernatural drama Believe."

Almost Human wrapped its first season earlier this month on Fox in the US.

Former Doctor Who actor Matt Smith, comedian Jack Whitehall and True Blood star Stephen Moyer have all signed up to take part in Soccer Aid 2014.

The new additions will play for the England team - captained by Robbie Williams - when the charity football event in aid of UNICEF returns on Sunday, June 8 at Old Trafford.

Football legends Jamie Redknapp, Jamie Carragher, Paul Ince, David Seaman and Teddy Sheringham have all signed up for the England Squad, while Edwin van der Sar and Jaap Stam will represent the Rest of the World, with more names expected to be announced soon.

UNICEF UK Ambassador Williams said: "Soccer Aid returns for the fifth time in June and I admit there are scores to settle.

"Leading the England team, I will be making sure we defend that trophy against Rest of the World. There's never been a better time for us to show our support for UNICEF, so please dig deep and buy your tickets now!"

UNICEF UK Executive Director David Bull added: "Soccer Aid 2014 will raise vital money to help some of the world's most vulnerable children get life-saving food, medicine and clean water.

"Every day, children are in serious danger and thousands die needlessly in the struggle against poverty, hunger and disease. It's time for us all to act. Please, buy a ticket to go to Soccer Aid or watch the match on ITV and help us change children's lives."

Dermot O'Leary and Kirsty Gallacher will return to host the match - which will be broadcast live on ITV - while Cat Deeley will present an hour-long show from the player's lounge in the lead-up to the event.

The bi-annual fundraiser was last held in 2012, and helped raise £4.9 million for UNICEF.

Doctor Who casts Line of Duty's Keeley Hawes in series 8

Keeley Hawes is to play a major role in the next series of Doctor Who.

Hawes - currently starring in BBC Two's hit drama Line of Duty - will play Ms Delphox on the BBC sci-fi drama.

Described as a "powerful out of this world character with a dark secret", Delphox will encounter the new Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and companion Clara (Jenna Coleman) when they arrive on a strange and puzzling planet.

"I am delighted to join Doctor Who and to be working with this incredible team," said Hawes, who will appear in the fifth episode of the new series, written by Steve Thompson.

"Ms Delphox is a great character and someone I've had a lot of fun playing."

Doctor Who's lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat added: "Anyone watching Jed Mercurio's amazing Line of Duty will know that Keeley Hawes is having one hell of a year. And now it's about to get even better as she achieves the greatest villainy yet attempted on Doctor Who - she plays a banker."

In addition to playing DI Lindsay Denton on Line of Duty, Hawes has also appeared in Spooks, Ashes to Ashes and Upstairs Downstairs.

Filming is currently under way on the new series of Doctor Who - Capaldi's first as the iconic Time Lord - with new episodes set to transmit in the autumn.

Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi's first episode thrilling, says Mark Gatiss

Tuesday, March 11, 2014

Mark Gatiss has promised an "exciting" and "disturbing" debut for Peter Capaldi on Doctor Who.

Speaking to Digital Spy at the London Lesbian & Gay Switchboard 40th Anniversary Gala last night, Gatiss spoke about writing for Doctor Who series eight.

"Peter has a very different energy to Matt Smith and to David Tennant," he said. "He's older which changes everything - it's amazing what a change does!

"Matt was sublime and I was very sorry to see him go, but it's also great to have a change - as it has always been with the Doctor."

Gatiss added that Capaldi's new Doctor brings with him "a whole new set of rules".

"The Doctor's always the Doctor - but you can have a lot of fun playing with people's expectations," he continued. "Everyone knows how the previous Doctor would react in any given situation - and now you just don't know!"

Steven Moffat has written Capaldi's first full Doctor Who episode, which Gatiss described as "thrilling".

The sci-fi drama will return to BBC One later in 2014, with Sherlock's Steve Thompson also among the confirmed writers for the latest run.
